Texas Robotaxi Bill Could End Tesla's Rollout by Sunday
The strict bill requires Level 4 or 5 autonomy for robotaxi services. Unless it's vetoed by the Governor by Sunday, June 22, the bill will be passed into law.
On June 10th, Musk tweeted that the Tesla robotaxi launch in Austin is “tentatively” set for June 22nd. This happens to be 3 days after Tesla’s June 19th deadline to answer an array of questions from NHTSA about Tesla’s robotaxi plans, as well as safety issues yet to be addressed regarding FSD’s capabilities to function when facing the sun’s glare or driving in hazy weather conditions.
June 22 also happens to be the last day that Texas Governor Abbott can veto a bipartisan bill with stricter regulation of robotaxi services in Texas. This bill could prevent Tesla from launching its robotaxi operations in Texas until it receives Level 4 autonomy certification for FSD, which could take a long time. Funny how Musk chose June 22 as his “tentative” launch date for Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin.
